Poros is the island of the Saronic closest
to the coast of the Peloponnese, separated from it by a 450
metres strait.
For that reason the capital of Poros is a good base for exploring
the sites, coasts and mainland of the Peloponnese. Poros attracts
mostly Athenians who go there for weekends.
The island is made of two islands, small Sferia and larger
Kalavria, connected by a shallow isthmus cut by a canal. The
town of Poros is located on Sferia; Kalavria is full of verdant
forests and concentrates most of the package hotels.
The beaches of Poros are located on the
southern coast of Kalavria, the larger of the two islands
forming the island of Poros.
The most famous beaches are the one located in the Russian
Bay (on the south-west), Neorion Beach and Kanali Beach. All
are organised, proposing sun beds and umbrellas rentals, as
well as some water sports facilities.
The large beach of Neorion (also called Megalo Neorio) has
a well-equipped water sports centre. Small sandy or rocky
coves can also be found between the main touristy beaches.
